A Super Start to a New School Year: Prioritizing Attendance, Excellence, and Well-Being

As we begin the 2025–2026 school year, I want to remind every student, parent, and educator in Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) that this year will be nothing short of super.

At MPS, we believe that everyone is a superhero, from our teachers and school staff to our students and their families. Every day brings a new opportunity to soar higher, dream bigger, and accomplish more. This year, we are calling on all our heroes to unite around four powerful priorities: daily attendance, academic excellence, leadership, and mental wellness.

Attendance is your superpower. Every day a student is in school, they are gaining the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, not just this year, but for the rest of their lives. We can’t teach a child who isn’t present. That’s why it’s so important for families to make daily attendance a top priority. Showing up on time and ready to learn is the first step to academic success.

We are also committed to cultivating academic excellence in every classroom. Our teachers are prepared to provide high-quality, rigorous instruction, and our schools are focused on helping every student meet and exceed grade-level expectations. But academic excellence doesn’t happen by accident; it takes effort, discipline, and the support of engaged families and communities.

At MPS, we don’t just teach content, we build leaders. Whether your child is in kindergarten or high school, we want them to leave our schools equipped to lead in their communities, their careers, and beyond. Leadership means responsibility, empathy, and vision, all qualities we help develop in our students every day.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we recognize that mental wellness is essential. Students cannot learn if they’re not mentally and emotionally well. That’s why we continue to expand resources for social-emotional learning, counseling, and community partnerships that support the whole child. We encourage families to speak openly with children about their feelings and seek support when needed.

Together, we are building a culture where all students are empowered to thrive. I’m excited for what this school year holds, and I look forward to celebrating the many accomplishments ahead. Let’s make this a year of powerful learning, personal growth, and endless possibilities.
