This year marks Melissa Baker’s first year at Evangel Christian Academy. However, she is not new to teaching, as she has 36 years of experience in the field. Melissa chose to work at Evangel because it provides numerous ministry opportunities that align with the school’s mission. She values the importance of preparing students both academically and spiritually.
After graduating from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics Secondary education, her passion was to teach. Melissa shares, “As a young student, I did not enjoy school at all! After I realized that I enjoyed learning math and helping others as their math tutor, I decided that if I could help a student enjoy school just a little bit more, it would be worth it.”
And that’s what she did. For nearly four decades, Melissa has been paving the way for students and giving back to the community through her advocacy for education despite the challenges that it potentially brings. But her joy and belief in every student and her vow to never leave a student behind, she shares, “I believe God created every person on purpose, with a purpose, and for a purpose. Preparing students to live and function in a world that needs their gifts and talents is a high calling and fulfills a deep place in my heart. To teach the students to see the good in people and find good in society propels a circle of kindness that will always come back to you.”
As Melissa dedicates her time to her students, not only is she changing lives and making a tremendous impact across the community, she’s preparing students to live and function in a world that needs their gifts and talents. Her mission is to teach students to see the good in people and find the good in society. She encourages her students when they do good deeds, kindness will always come back to them.
Melissa hopes people understand that she teaches because she loves it, not just for a paycheck. After her teaching career, she would like to continue mentoring the next generation of teachers. Helping students, families, and teachers find resources to support their learning needs.
Melissa Baker has one son, who will be a senior at Evangel Christian Academy this upcoming school year. She and her son reside in Montgomery, AL.
