I’ll turn 54 in November of this year, and let’s just say—I don’t exactly count down the days to my birthday like I did when I was seven. There’s no big party or themed cake in my honor; maybe a quiet dinner and a few heartfelt texts, and I’m perfectly content. But watching a child light up at the mention of their birthday? Their excitement is contagious. It reminds us that birthdays aren’t just about getting older—they’re about being celebrated.
That’s why our Annual Birthday Issue is such a fun one to put together each year. In these pages, we’ve packed in creative ideas, local resources, and inspiration to help you celebrate your child in a way that feels meaningful and manageable.
That last word—manageable—is a big one. We know birthday parties can quickly spiral into high-stress, high-cost productions. And if you’ve scrolled through Pinterest or social media lately, you’ve seen it. It’s easy to feel pressure to keep up.
That’s why I especially love one of this month’s featured articles: Why Keep Birthdays Simple? It’s a breath of fresh air for any parent who’s feeling overwhelmed, as it offers gentle encouragement for scaling things back while still creating joyful memories. It reminds us that what kids really want is to feel seen and celebrated. You’ll love the ideas Ashley Enderle shares in the practical guide to a simpler birthday celebration.
On the flip side, if you’re looking for a fun twist on the classic sleepover party, you’ll want to check out our article on How to Host a Glamping Sleepover. This creative idea turns your backyard (or living room) into a cozy (and stylish!) campout, with just enough flair to feel extra special. Think twinkle lights, teepees or tents, s’mores bars, and spa-like touches—without having to rent a venue or stay up all night cleaning cake out of the carpet. It’s a unique way to give your child and their friends a night to remember.
Just like our children’s special day, July is also a time to celebrate the birthday of our great country. As we gather with family and enjoy the traditions of the Fourth, let’s take a moment to lift a glass to the incredible nation we call home—and to the brave men and women who protect it and ensure our freedom each and every day.
